The Oglethorpe Light Infantry was organized in Savannah on January 8, 1856. John N. Lewis was the troop's first captain, but he resigned after holding the position for only a few months. Francis S. Robert Falligant (1839-1902) was a distinguished citizen of Savannah, Georgia. He was a lawyer and served in both houses of the Georgia Legislature. He was Judge of the Eastern Judicial Circuit from 1889 until his death. During the Civil War he served first with the Southern Guards (a company of University of Virginia students), and then as a 2nd Lieutenant with Cabell's Battalion of Artillery. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
